Macrobiotics meaning big or great life is also considered the universal way of health and happiness. Its use can be traced back to Hippocrates who is called the Father of western medicine. Interestingly he mainly healed people with food. This is one of the central tenets of Macrobiotics that the greatest medicine is our daily food.
In the mid 1900s Macrobiotics was popularised by the Japanese philosopher and medical practitioner George Ohsawa. Ohsawa has seen his family become sick and die following a western diet and medicine. He himself had nearly died until he discovered a book on healing based on the traditional Japanese diet. Within three months he had completely healed and in gratitude he devoted his life to promoting the way of health through food and diet.
