Learn Aikido in Sydney

合 – ‘ai’ – unifying, harmonising
気 – ‘ki’ – spirit, energy, life force
道 – ‘dō’ – way, path

Aikido is an effective martial art that is so much more than exercise.

It is a peaceful and dynamic martial art that is suitable for everyone, based on redirecting the energy of an attack and returning harmony and balance. Aikido is designed to bring out your full potential for joyful, healthy and successful living.

Aikido’s unique approach is based on protecting an attacker throughout conflict. This requires you to be in touch with your true power based on mind/body unity. This power is called ‘Ki’.

Ki can be defined as the energy that is behind and within all things. When your mind and body are unified and in harmony, there is an energy that permeates all your actions – an irresistible influence.

Aikido is also called the art of ‘non-resistance’ as the attacker’s desire to attack is dissolved.

Like trying to attack the ocean, it is better to let go and flow with its currents rather than swim against it.

So beyond the martial art, Aikido becomes the way of flowing with nature’s forces to turn your life into a calming state of flow.

What is Aikido and how does it work?

There are many different forms of martial arts. While some are focused on strikes, kicks, punches or grappling, Aikido is unique.

Aikido is centred around harmonising with your opponent’s movement and redirecting their energy through timing, balance and positioning. It is a skill that anyone can learn.

For this reason, you don’t need to be the biggest, strongest or fastest to enjoy Aikido.

Aikido is a non-competitive art and is perfect for beginners or the most skilled martial artist.

Through absorbing an attacker’s power and redirecting their energy, Aikido sees any physical attack as a gift that can be confidently dealt with in a peaceful and calm way.

Learned in our safe and supportive Kensington Dojo, and held within yourself long after you step off the mat, Aikido is the ideal martial art for women, men and children from all walks of life and skill levels.

More than a new way to safely resolve conflict, you will learn to find a harmonious way forward, not just on the mat, but throughout all of life’s challenges.

Aikido helps to improve your mind, body and spirit. It is not simply a martial art, but a way of life.

Why learn Aikido?

Are you wondering what martial art is the best to learn?

With so many different needs of different people, there is no single answer.

However, when comparing Aikido vs Judo or Jiu-Jitsu, you will find that while other martial arts focus on the physical skills needed to overpower an opponent, Aikido offers much more – both in conflict and in life.

One of the benefits of Aikido is the holistic approach its skills have on your life.

Aikido was created to bring about one’s full potential to enjoy a happy, successful and healthy life by harnessing Ki and restoring a sense of balance.

Aikido is a powerful discipline, as it harnesses flexibility and strength, but more importantly, it will lead you to self-victory as you gain clarity in your life’s purpose.

Whether you want to enjoy life armed with increased confidence and self-esteem, or your child wants to learn how to defuse conflict in the schoolyard, Aikido is the ideal foundation.

What will I learn?

Through Aikido, you will learn many important lessons.

As well as learning a martial art, you will get fit, and even come to make new friends. While there’s no single reason to practise Aikido, some of the main benefits include:

  • ✓ Learning and training in peaceful self-defence
  • ✓ Discovering your own assertiveness and confidence
  • ✓ Guidance on practising mindfulness
  • ✓ Improved flexibility and core fitness

Aikido is a martial art that is highly effective for everyone no matter your size, gender or age, offering an holistic service that provides fitness, fun and an outlet for frustration in a safe, welcoming space.

As well as learning physical moves, you will find inner peace and learn about yourself alongside others going through similar experiences. Even on your individual journey, Aikido is a shared and valued experience.

About Sensei Ken

Sensei Ken McLean is the founder of Shin Sen Dojo and has over 50 years’ experience training in a variety of martial arts. His knowledge is unmatched in the Sydney region.

With over four decades of personal experience in cultivating Ki energy, practising Aikido and using Ki Shiatsu and macrobiotics as methods of Aiki healing, he is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher. Quite simply – he is the best in Sydney when it comes to Aikido.

While his standing as a well respected and sought after Aikido Sensei in Sydney may reflect his passion, his journey to this point has been central in creating the Shin Sen Dojo.

The son of a former Australian professional boxing champion, Ken started to form the basis of his future teachings while watching his father’s movement. He learnt how important it is to follow the motion of your attack and absorb the energy and strength of your opponent.

Ken began training in Aiki Jujitsu and Judo when he was just 12, and not long after took up yoga. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of martial, spiritual and healing arts leading him to become one of the most respectable Sensei in Sydney.

Throughout his life, Ken has come to understand the principles of Macrobiotics, great nature (Shizen), life energy (Ki), and continues to train, teach and inspire students of all ages and backgrounds through his passion for a holistic, unified approach to Aikido.

I have thoroughly enjoyed learning Shin-sen Aikido. With each class I feel greatly re-invigorated and more healthy than ever before. The unique Shin-sen methods energise me in a most uplifting way and have been a great experience for me. The teacher possesses a rare depth of knowledge that creates a insightful, rewarding and collegial environment for all students. Shin-sen Aikido is a fascinating opportunity worthy of serious attention. I would recommend it to everyone without hesitation.
Andrew Scaborough
I have been practicing Aikido for nearly 2 years now and enjoy it immensely. It appealed to me in the beginning as a way of learning a non- aggressive martial art but has developed into much more than that. A t the age of 60 when I started it was somewhat difficult to get my stubborn body and brain parts to cooperate. However over time and with perseverance the body has become increasingly more flexible. At Shin Sen Dojo there are many advanced practitioners who help and teach under the guidance of the Sensei and I feel that I am beginning to scratch the surface while having a great deal of fun.
Mike Hanrahan
I was anxious before starting, but once I started I completely fell in love. The fitness is a benefit, but the overall calmness I experience in my everyday life since starting at the Dojo is what really surprised me.
